Louisa Stark, '79, will be honored as the 2009 GVSU Distinguished Alumna during the April 25 Commencement Ceremony.
Dr. Stark is a leader in genetics and genomics education, having made notable contributions to the field of science education that are of national and international significance. She is director of the University of Utah’s Genetic Science Learning Center. She also serves the University of Utah as clinical professor of Science Education and associate director of the School of Medicine’s Community Engagement Core Center for Clinical and Translational Sciences.
Stark earned a bachelor of science in biology from Grand Valley State University in 1979, where she spent several years as a teachers assistant. This role provided the foundation for her interest in becoming an educator and ignited her ongoing interest in facilitating learning for others.

Join the Fight Against Cancer - April 3-4
Sign up now to join the GVSU Alumni Association team in the 2009 American Cancer Society Relay for Life event at Grand Valley State University. Beginning at 6 p.m. on April 3 until 6 a.m. on April 4, walkers will take shifts circling the track in the Field House and collect money to help eliminate cancer. We hope you will join us as a walker or by sponsoring alumni team participants. Sign up is easy online - click "Sign Up" to register as a walker or "Donate" to sponsor team GVSU Alumni Association 2009. Survivors can also sign up to participate in the survivor lap!
Royal Oak Alumni Club Formed
Led by Ashley G. Barnes, '06, the newly established Royal Oak Alumni Club debuts with two upcoming events. The club seeks to gather alumni together to encourage social interaction, professional networking and community service in the name of Grand Valley State University.
- Detroit Pistons Game: The Club will host area alumni in two private suites at the April 10, 2009, Detroit Pistons game versus the New Jersey Nets. Be part of the Royal Oak Club's first event; RSVP by March 30.
- Gleaners Food Bank in Detroit: Gather with Royal Oak area alumni & friends to participate in a community service project at the Gleaners Food Bank in Detroit on May 23, 2009. Sign up to volunteer by May 1.
GradFest Volunteers Needed April 13 - 16
You are invited to help us welcome new graduates into the Alumni Association and congratulate them on their success at GradFest 2009. In the celebratory environment, volunteers will be discussing the benefits of association membership and presenting gifts to graduating students. This is your opportunity to volunteer at an exciting event and introduce yourself to the newest members of the Alumni Association. Shifts are available in one hour increments between 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. in Allendale or Grand Rapids. For further information or to sign up, contact alumni@gvsu.edu.
Alumni Couples Enjoy Valentine's Celebration
30 alumni couples returned to where their love began during Classic Pairings, a special alumni Valentine’s Day celebration held on GVSU’s Allendale campus February 13. The talented chefs of Grand Valley’s Classic Fare Catering created a gourmet Caribbean-themed menu for the affair, while a sommelier was on hand to provide information on wine pairings chosen for each of the courses.

GVSU Alumni Invade Hockeytown
Over 65 Grand Valley State University alumni reunited at Hockeytown Cafe in Detroit prior to the Detroit Red Wings hockey game versus the Colorado Avalanche on February 15. Graduates enjoyed networking, an all-you-can-eat buffet, and the chance to win authentic Red Wings autographed merchandise courtesy of FSN Detroit Red Wings LIVE host and GVSU graduate John Keating, '76. The group then hopped on shuttles to the Joe Louis Arena for the exciting hockey action. The Avalanche beat the Red Wings in an over-time shootout 6-5.

Young Alumni Enjoy Wine Tasting
90 young alumni gathered at the Bite in downtown Grand Rapids on February 19 for the sold-out Young Alumni Wine Tasting, the third event hosted by the Young Alumni Council and their largest attended event held to date. Guests sampled and learned about five different wine varieties and food pairings, while networking with peers and members of the Young Alumni Council.

Women Athletes Return to GVSU for 40th Anniversary Celebration
Nearly 25 former female Laker athletes battled the weather to return to Allendale on February 21, and celebrate 40 Years of Excellence in women's athletics at GVSU. Guests met for a reception at the Alumni House and Visitor Center and heard from President Tom Haas, Athletic Director Tim Selgo and current and former coaches about the program. The group then toured the new Laker Turf Building before heading to the Laker Women's and Men's Basketball games vs. Saginaw Valley State Univeristy. Attendees were recognized during a special half-time celebration and presented with varsity letters to commemorate their contributions to Grand Valley's sports legacy.

Event Recap
Tampa Alumni Club - Tampa club leader Tara Crow, '97, hosted 18 Grand Valley graduates on February 28 in Lakeland, FL. The group met for a pre-game picnic at the ballpark and a Detroit Tigers spring training game vs. the New York Mets.
