Edward Cardenas, '95, named press secretary for Detroit city mayor.

On July 15, Detroit mayor David Bing named Grand Valley State University alumnus Edward Cardenas as his press secretary. Cardenas, 35, is a former Detroit News reporter and spokesman for U.S. Rep. Candice Miller. He also was a volunteer with the Detroit Local Organizing Committee for the men's NCAA Final Four and the National Summit. He graduated from Grand Valley in 1995 with a bachelor's degree in International Relations.

Thomas Jefferson and William James College Reunion - Aug. 6-8

United Stage, the theater group of Thomas Jefferson College that performed folk tales and children's stories around campus and for the greater community, is returning to their roots. Thomas Jefferson College and William James College graduates as well as all GVSU alumni, friends and community members are invited to take part in this reunion.

Young Alumni Picnic on the Plaza and Fireworks Fete - September 11

Join GVSU Young Alumni, families and friends for a Picnic on the Plaza & Firework Fete. Enjoy lawn games and a boxed lunch picnic dinner in the DeVos Center grassy courtyard area. Bring blankets and chairs for true picnic style dining. Following dinner & games, head to the Eberhard Center riverfront area for a private VIP view of the Celebration on the Grand fireworks.

  • 7:30 p.m. - Picnic meal
  • Dusk - Celebration on the Grand Fireworks

Cost to attend is $10 per adult (get tix) or $5 per child under 12 (get tix). Please RSVP by September 4.

Laker Football Tailgate Information

Join us September 12 for the 2009 Laker football home opener versus SVSU. Kick off the season right with a pre-game tailgate party sponsored by the GVSU Alumni Association, Seidman College of Business Alumni Association, GVSU Police Academy and GVSU Family Association. Cost is just $5 per person and includes DJ entertainment, face painting, food and beverages - fun for the entire family! Plus, get insider information from special guests President Thomas J. Haas, Athletic Director Tim Selgo, and Dean H. James Williams Purchase tickets by September 5.

GVSU Football Radio Tailgate Show Tour

The 2009 preseason "GVSU Football Radio Tailgate Show Tour" will provide all the inside scoop on this season's Laker football team, rumored to be the best in years. Each show will be an hour long and feature GVSU Head Football Coach Chuck Martin along with other special guests. The three shows making up the tailgate tour will air live from 6 - 7 p.m. on WTKG-AM 1230 three consecutive Thursday nights starting August 6. Tune in or join the show live at tour stops. Memorial Scheduled for GVSU Founder L. William Seidman

L. William Seidman, founding chair of Grand Valley's Board of Trustees, died May 13, 2009 at the age of 88. Seidman was one of the founders of Grand Valley State University, helping galvanize local support for the establishment of a public four-year university in West Michigan. A memorial service is planned at 3 p.m. on September 11 in GVSU's Performing Arts Center in Allendale with a reception to follow. Read more...

Many volunteer opportunities are available for Homecoming Saturday, including facilitating tours of the Alumni House and Visitor Center, assisting with registration and entertainment at the Alumni Tailgater, or helping with the Pancake Breakfast. Alumni Golfers Raise Funds for Students

Over 200 alumni and friends participated in two alumni golf outings held last month at the Meadows, raising nearly $6,000 in support of GVSU students. The annual Sleep Inn & Suites All-Alumni Benefit Golf Outing was held July 11 with proceeds donated to Shaping Our Future: The Campaign for Grand Valley State University. (View photos and winners ). The July 18 Football Alumni Reunion Golf Outing celebrated the era of Jim Harkema, head Laker football coach from 1973-1982. Funds were raised in support of the Laker football endowment (view photos and winners).

Lakers March in Cherry Festival Parade

Over 110 Lakers took to the streets for the 2009 Cherry Royale Parade during Traverse City's 83rd National Cherry Festival on July 11. This year marked the second annual alumni march at the festival where alumna Angela Sayler, '08, was crowned National Cherry Queen. Members of the Alumni Association joined the Laker pep band, cheer and dance teams, Louie the Laker, faculty, staff and friends in handing out Laker tatoos, merchandise and candy to the record-breaking crowds. The Grand Valley troop was cheered by raucous "Lets Go Laker" chants as they made their way through the packed city streets.

Alumni Gather for Whitecaps Baseball Game

A sold-out crowd of 75 GVSU alumni and guests took in America's favorite summer pastime on July 15. Guests enjoyed an all-you-can-eat pre-game barbecue and watched the West Michigan Whitecaps take on the Peoria Chiefs from their seats in the private Centennial Securities Upper Dream Deck. Graduates came from as far as Seattle for the festivities which ended with a bang - post-game fireworks!

Young Alumni Volunteer at Camp Blodgett

On July 27, thirteen GVSU graduates shared dinner and took part in camp activities with 103 campers at Camp Blodgett in Grand Haven, MI. Camp Blodgett's mission is to give children the knowledge, tools and desire to be successful in school and in life. The Young Alumni Council provided back-to-school supply bags to each camper and volunteers contributed donations for the camp's after school programs. The event proved to be a meaningful experience for all participants and an example of the multitude of ways in which Grand Valley State University promotes the value of educational access for all individuals.

GVSU Board Sets Tuition and Raises Aid - At their meeting on July 20, Grand Valley State University's Board of Trustees set tuition for the 2009-2010 academic year against a backdrop of a rocky state economy, internal budget cuts of $7.2 million, and eroding state appropriations. The board also voted to dampen the impact of the tuition increase with a boost to student financial aid that will help ensure affordability and access. Read more...

National organization gives Grand Valley high marks for LGBT-friendly campus - A national nonprofit organization dedicated to making college campuses safe for LGBT students gave Grand Valley high marks for administrative policy changes and creation of the LGBT Resource Center. Campus Pride gave Grand Valley four-and-one-half out of five stars on its LGBT Friendly Campus Climate Index. Read more...

Club & Chapter Corner

Indianapolis, IN - Club leader Jennifer Poad-Baker, '92, hosted area Lakers at an Indianapolis Indians baseball game versus the Buffalo Bisons on July 26. Attendees received Tribal Tokens for souvenir and concessions use and are planning a tailgate party on September 5 when the Laker football team takes on Indianapolis.

Rowing Alumni Chapter - Senior Sarah Zelenka represented GVSU and the U.S. in the world rowing championships in the Czech Republic from July 23-26. Zelenka competed in the women's four event, sharing a boat with athletes from Harvard, University of Michigan and University of Wisconsin. Her feat was particularly impressive because she competed alongside athletes from Division I programs that offer full scholarships. Unlike those schools, Grand Valley's program is a club sport, where students have to pay dues and hold fundraisers to support the team. Read more...
