Lakers March in Cherry Festival Parade
Over 110 Lakers took to the streets for the 2009 Cherry Royale Parade during Traverse City's 83rd National Cherry Festival on July 11. This year marked the second annual alumni march at the festival where alumna Angela Sayler, '08, was crowned National Cherry Queen. Members of the Alumni Association joined the Laker pep band, cheer and dance teams, Louie the Laker, faculty, staff and friends in handing out Laker tatoos, merchandise and candy to the record-breaking crowds. The Grand Valley troop was cheered by raucous "Lets Go Laker" chants as they made their way through the packed city streets.
Alumni Gather for Whitecaps Baseball Game
A sold-out crowd of 75 GVSU alumni and guests took in America's favorite summer pastime on July 15. Guests enjoyed an all-you-can-eat pre-game barbecue and watched the West Michigan Whitecaps take on the Peoria Chiefs from their seats in the private Centennial Securities Upper Dream Deck. Graduates came from as far as Seattle for the festivities which ended with a bang - post-game fireworks!
Young Alumni Volunteer at Camp Blodgett
On July 27, thirteen GVSU graduates shared dinner and took part in camp activities with 103 campers at Camp Blodgett in Grand Haven, MI. Camp Blodgett's mission is to give children the knowledge, tools and desire to be successful in school and in life. The Young Alumni Council provided back-to-school supply bags to each camper and volunteers contributed donations for the camp's after school programs. The event proved to be a meaningful experience for all participants and an example of the multitude of ways in which Grand Valley State University promotes the value of educational access for all individuals.
GVSU Board Sets Tuition and Raises Aid - At their meeting on July 20, Grand Valley State University's Board of Trustees set tuition for the 2009-2010 academic year against a backdrop of a rocky state economy, internal budget cuts of $7.2 million, and eroding state appropriations. The board also voted to dampen the impact of the tuition increase with a boost to student financial aid that will help ensure affordability and access. Read more...

Club & Chapter Corner
Indianapolis, IN - Club leader Jennifer Poad-Baker, '92, hosted area Lakers at an Indianapolis Indians baseball game versus the Buffalo Bisons on July 26. Attendees received Tribal Tokens for souvenir and concessions use and are planning a tailgate party on September 5 when the Laker football team takes on Indianapolis.
Rowing Alumni Chapter - Senior Sarah Zelenka represented GVSU and the U.S. in the world rowing championships in the Czech Republic from July 23-26. Zelenka competed in the women's four event, sharing a boat with athletes from Harvard, University of Michigan and University of Wisconsin. Her feat was particularly impressive because she competed alongside athletes from Division I programs that offer full scholarships. Unlike those schools, Grand Valley's program is a club sport, where students have to pay dues and hold fundraisers to support the team.
